There is a wealth of technology for registrants to use as part of their practice. As a result it is becoming increasingly common for registrants to offer part, or all, of their services online, or by phone, rather than face-to-face.
When offering these types of services, you should consider your professional responsibilities set out within our standards.
You must use all forms of communication appropriately and responsibility, including social media and networking websites (2.7)
You must take all reasonable steps to reduce the risk of harm to service users (##)
Standards of conduct, performance and ethics
You must understand the need to establish and maintain a safe practice environment (##)
Standards of proficiency
You may want to:
- Consider whether providing services online (or by phone) will hinder your ability to make informed decisions in the best interests of the service user.
- Establish, if the above is true, whether the service user is aware of limits to the services you have provided online.
- Take all necessary steps to mitigate any risks to service user confidentiality.
Professional bodies and employers may have more detailed guidance on providing service in these areas.
