Resources on record keeping

Below we have listed the main resources that we signpost registrants to, when they have a question about record keeping

Most of these resources are focused on NHS practice, however they are still a useful guide for private practitioners looking to establish their own codes and guidance.

UK-wide

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guide on data protection

England and Wales

The Information Governance Alliance’s (IGA) Records Management Code of Practice for Health and Social Care 2016.

Appendix 3 of the Code contains the detailed retention schedules, setting out how long records should be retained, either due to their ongoing administrative value or as a result of statutory requirement.

Please be aware, the Records Management Code of Practice 2016 is soon to be replaced by the Records Management Code of Practice 2020. We will keep this page under review and update this content when this goes live.

Scotland

The Scottish Government Records Management Health and Social Care Code of Practice (Scotland) 2020.
