An experienced physiotherapist working for a charity that supports people with learning disabilities, their families and carers in northern England

Dylan is an experienced physiotherapist working for a charity that supports people with learning disabilities, their families and carers in northern England.

Approach

Part of his role involves delegating healthcare activities to staff and carers at the day centre. in this case, he delegates universal mobility activities, such as practicing with a new mobility aid and doing leg exercises while sitting. He works with the staff and service users to identify the delegated healthcare activities that are right for them, understanding the importance of a person-centred approach.

Dylan knows the HCPC’s standards of conduct, performance and ethics which relate to delegation. He knows that delegation is a continual process built on relationships, in part to ensure he is only delegating work to people who have the knowledge, skills and experience needed to carry out the activities safely and effectively. He also refers to resources by Skills for Care including the delegated healthcare activities guiding principles.

The day centre manager, staff, carers and service users know how to contact Dylan if they have any concerns or if there is a change in need. He regularly provides refresher training, supports new staff and regularly evaluates service user progress.

Feedback from managers, staff and service users highlights the positive impact of Dylan’s approach, including increasing the opportunities for service users to be more physically active.
