A registrant manager based in Scotland who wants to develop a new advanced practice role within their team

Shona is an AHP Lead for a large NHS Board in Scotland. She is responsible for developing AHP advanced practice roles within the Board, including introducing trainee roles as a route into the advanced practice level.
Approach
Her approach is guided by the Transforming Roles paper 9: allied health professions advanced practice. She uses the nationally agreed definition and job title format to inform her workforce planning. The Transforming Roles Methodology provides Shona with a structured approach to ensure AHP advanced practice roles are aligned with service user needs, drivers for change, and the evidence base. The methodology supports:
- the definition of role purpose and scope;
- establishing appropriate education and training pathways aligned with level 7 on the NHS Education for Scotland Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Development Framework; and
- robust financial modelling.
Shona understands that the regulatory standards set by the HCPC apply to professionals working at the level of advanced practice. She recognises the importance of the standards for continuing professional development (CPD) to appropriately develop AHP advanced practice roles. As part of the workforce plan, she addresses the necessary governance arrangements, including appropriate supervision, education, training and development.
Shona ensures that trainees are supported through structured preceptorship with both an educational supervisor and a practice/clinical supervisor, the latter of which works with the trainee on the multi-faceted sign-off process within their NHS Education for Scotland AHP Professional Portfolio.
To demonstrate the value of the trainee role, Shona identifies ways to measure the impact and evaluation from the outset, including benefits to service-user care.
