Health and care professionals who work as either registered prosthetists or as reconstructive scientists do incredibly valuable work in supporting patients to live healthier, happier and more independent lives.
Health and care professionals who are members of either the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO) or the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists (IMPT) are highly skilled, autonomous practitioners, and are registered with either the HCPC or the General Dental Council (GDC).
The title of ‘prosthetist’ is protected in statute and should only be used by those registered with the HCPC as such.
The HCPC does also have registrants who use the title ‘maxillofacial prosthetist’, however these individuals are registered as clinical scientists.
They can also be registered with the GDC as a dental care professional.
Owing to this distinction, and to enable the public to search the appropriate register with greater clarity and accuracy, we would advise anyone working as a maxillofacial prosthetists registered with the HCPC to use the title ‘clinical scientist - reconstructive scientist’.
