• How to filter data

  1. Click 'Filter' to display filter options
  2. Select an option like 'Profession or modality', 'Report group' and/or 'Registration route'
  3. Click 'Apply' to close filter options and view data

• Understanding the trends of those joining and leaving the Register

  • There is a natural drop in numbers every two years, as most registrants leave the Register by letting their registration lapse at renewal. 
  • UK-trained registrants tend to join the Register after graduating, meaning there is sharp increase during the summer. 
  • For professions that renew around the graduation time, these two events cancel each other out every other year
  • Some professions may also see peaks at other times of year, as registrants may time their entry to avoid joining just before a renewal.
  • Unlike the UK route, international registrations has less of a summer surge, though they often rise around that time of year.
• Reporting timepoints

  For the register over time, the monthly counts are as at the first day of the month.

  For the register by characteristics, the counting approach varies by report group:

  • For registered professionals the counts are cumulative at six month intervals.
  • For first-time registrants the counts are cumulative at one year intervals.
  • For deregistered professionals the counts are cumulative at two year intervals.

  These reporting timelines are aligned with HCPC registration and renewal cycles for each profession whereby:

  • For registered professionals, the sixth monthly cumulative counts are taken immediately before the renewal window opens, two months after the short readmission window closes, at the mid point between renewal windows and then six months before the next renewal window.
  • For first time registrants, the annual cumulative counts are taken immediately before the renewal window opens, and then at the mid point between renewal windows.
  • For deregistered professionals, the two year cumulative counts are taken three months after the short readmission window closes.

  The cumulative periods were chosen to lessen the impact of the sudden changes that can occur at renewal when most of those leaving the registerer do so.

• Data update schedule

  Data will be updated according to the established reporting frequency, which is different depending on the group: 

  • Every six months for registered professionals
  • Annually for first-time registrants
  • Every two years for deregistered professionals

  Registrants
  Individuals who were actively registered with us at the time of analysis, meeting the required standards for their profession.​

  Professions
  The 15 health and care professions regulated by us, each with protected titles that are legally restricted to those on the HCPC Register. ​

  Modality
  Specific disciplines or specialisations within certain professions regulated by the HCPC. For example, practitioner psychologists have modalities such as clinical, counselling, or educational psychology.

  Report groups
  Categories used in reporting that include current registered professionals, first-time registrants, and deregistered professionals.​

  Registration route
  The pathway through which individuals join our Register, such as completing a UK-approved education programme or applying via the international routes. ​

  Characteristic type
  Attributes used to filter and interpret data, including:​

  • Protected characteristics: Four of the nine characteristics defined by the Equality Act 2010, which include age, disability, ethnicity, and sex. ​
  • Additional characteristics: Factors such as years since first registration, years since graduation, primary workplace, registration route, training location (UK and worldwide), and workplace location.
