The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care
The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (previously known as The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence), scrutinises and oversees the work of the nine health and care regulators.
The PSA shares good practice and knowledge with the regulators, conducts research and audits the regulator’s fitness to practise process. There is more information about the work of the PSA here.
Performance review
Each year, the PSA carries out an annual performance review of the nine regulators. Regulators are assessed against the PSA’s standards for good regulation and the PSA then publish a report summarising each regulator’s performance.
Accredited Voluntary Registers
The Professional Standards Authority also accredits voluntary registers of people working in a variety of health and social care occupations. Where occupations are not subject to statutory regulation, the Accredited Voluntary Registers scheme allows people to choose practitioners who are on a register that has been independently assessed and approved.
