If you’re asked to complete a test of competence, it means we need more information about whether you can practice safely and effectively in the UK

ⓘ The process for international applications has recently changed. This page now reflects the current process and outcomes. Read more about the changes >

The test of competence is your chance to prove that:

  • you can apply your knowledge in practice and make safe, evidence-based decisions;
  • you can communicate effectively with service users and colleagues;
  • you have a sufficient level of professional knowledge, professional competence and clinical reasoning;
  • you understand, and are able to adapt to, UK-specific practice contexts.

What is the test of competence?

The test of competence is a conversation, not a written test. It uses an approach we call a ‘Structured Professional Discussion’.

It’s carried out by two assessors, who will both be registered members of your profession.

In most cases it’s conducted online via Microsoft Teams, but in some cases it may be conducted in person.

What’s in the test?

Each test is tailored to each applicant.

It's based on:

  • the issues or gaps in your application;
  • the areas we are assessing; and

In the test, the assessors will explore how you would respond to a number of clinical and ethical scenarios. They may ask you to explain your reasoning and reflect on your practice as you answer.

They may also ask you to give clarifications about complex or unclear evidence provided in your application.

How will I know I need the test?

When we email you with the ‘first decision’ on your application, we’ll let you know whether a test of competence is needed. We'll also let you know why, with reference to the evidence you've provided.

Our email will include instructions for arranging your test.

When will I get the results of the test?

After the test, our assessors will consider your answers and make a decision. The result of the test will either be a pass or a fail. You will be sent this result by email within two weeks.

What if I don’t pass?

If you don’t pass the test of competence, it means we can’t be sure that you are able to meet the standards we set for your profession. In this case, we’ll email you to let you know that your application to join the Register has not been successful and the reasons for this decision.

If you feel this decision is incorrect, you have the right to appeal.
