HCPC collaborates on joint statement on use of AI in health and care professional education

09 Chwef 2026

A collaboration of five regulators, including the HCPC has published a joint statement on principles relating to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education and training.

The HCPC produced guidance in 2024 to help education providers with the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advances such as AI.

The current joint statement is intended to sit alongside this, and other regulators’ work in this area.

It includes a set of principles to support healthcare education providers in the design and delivery of programmes; providing clarity around regulator views on AI in health and care education.

These will support education providers in delivering programmes that produce skilled, safe practitioners in a rapidly changing AI environment.

They outline expectations around academic integrity, accountability and the development of literacy in AI for staff and learners; with guidance on the preparation of learners in using AI appropriately once they enter work.

This technology is advancing quickly, so the group plans to continue this collaboration, coming together periodically to ensure its statement remains up to date.

The full collaboration comprises the Health and Care Professions Council, General Osteopathic Council, General Optical Council, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and General Pharmaceutical Council.
