Our role in approving approved mental health professional (AMHP) training

If you wish to offer a new AMHP programme, you will need to seek approval for the programme.

Under the Health and Social Care Act (2012), we took responsibility for approving AMHP programmes in England. The Act gives us powers to set criteria for approving AMHP programmes, to publish these criteria and to communicate the criteria to education providers.

We hold programmes to our approval criteria for approved mental health professional (AMHP) programmes. This criteria sets clear expectations of the processes and systems education providers delivering AMHP training should have in place to manage their programme. It also sets out our expectations of AMHP professionals. Education providers must ensure professionals who complete AMHP training are able to meet these competencies.
