Scoping report on existing research on complaints mechanisms

This report outlined current literature on the nature and extent of complaints about the professions regulated by the Health Professions Council in 2008. The review concluded that there was a range of physical and psychological barriers to making a complaint. Gender, ethnicity, age, and accessibility of advice were some of the physical barriers. Fear of retribution, scepticism and an unwillingness to seem ungrateful for a service were amongst the psychological barriers identified. The review confirmed that there was a lack of published work in this area, and pointed to the need for more empirical research which looks at complaints in more detail.
